hello hello. i have been so incredibly swallowed by my life lately that even taking the time to do things i really love, such as my lovely newsletter, requires excessive planning. nevertheless, i am taking the time tonight, the night before Eid, to write this piece.
this newsletter is about AI and Art.
so, i have some really strong opinions on AI and the use of such, specifically for art. you may have seen lately the internets debate on this after OpenAI’s “Studio Ghibli” styled animations. here is what i have to say:
i was one of the very few people on this planet who didn’t know about Studio Ghibli until literally mid-last year after a friend of mine did a presentation on it. the discoveries i made in that presentation, and after, shook me. the amount of work and countless hours put into making one of these productions was wild. sitting and watching this presentation, i was amazed by their dedication and Miyazaki’s devotion to his work.
the use of AI, no matter how easy it may be, can never be condoned in Art. Miyazaki’s truth and his very public opinion on the use of AI in his works should have been enough for his art to not be plagiarized by OpenAI.
as a practicing artist, i understand the effort it takes to create one piece of work. i have days blocked out just create one original artwork. it is not just about getting up and making, the thinking and conceptualizing it takes to get to the final product is actually worth more than just using AI to figure this shit out for you. so to say, the use of AI for any stage of your art-making process is questionable entirely. and don’t even get me started on the environmental damage AI does.
think about it, is not doing 20 minuets of research really worth our fucking planet? is it worth the integrity of your art?
my views are simple, i would never condone the use of AI to create art. as an abstract artist, i think the beauty of art is in its irregularities; its “imperfections”. AI can always create more, but it can never replicate the essence of a human being. art made by AI will never stand a chance opposed to the work of an ARTIST. it is disrespectful to every artist out there to have their work even be compared to AI’s.
“i want AI to do my laundry and dishes so that i have time to do Art, not AI to do my Art so that i have time to do laundry and dishes”.
before you jump on the bandwagon and start following “trends”, sit back and for once think about what this means. your use of this new feature is not only a threat to artists, but incomprehensibly disrespectful to Miyazaki’s work and legacy.
ART FOR THE ARTIST, BY THE ARTIST.
until next time, ciao
